Clay paver path runs getween planted sandy banks to a bothy, Hospitalfield Arts Garden, RHS Chelsea 2025
The mix of Seville, Roma and Antique Red clay pavers makes a bespoke colourway that complements the distant bothy.

Hospitalfield Arts Garden

The Hospitalfield Arts Garden evokes the soft sand dunes on Scotland’s east coast. Massed coastal planting helps create a strong sense of place, where artists can find inspiration and succour. The bothy is at the heart of the design, approached by a path of clay pavers.

One of the strengths of using clay pavers is the fine adjustments that can be made to the overall colour by mixing different products. Here, Professor of Planting Design Dr Nigel Dunnett made a bespoke colourway of 60% Seville, 20% Antique Red and 20% Roma clay pavers; the first two are from our Alpha range and the Roma is found in our Kessel Garden clay pavers. In the warm mix of reds, the inclusion of the darker Antique Red brick paver subtly picks up the dark shades in the bothy and rusted metal sheets that stabilise the dunes, and help unite the design.

Built by Landform Consultants, the garden won Silver-Gilt.

SGLD trade stand

SGLD stand at Chelsea Flower Show 2025 with Vicenza Sand Flamed limestone paving
Vicenza Sand Flamed limestone from our specification-only Prestige range, underscores the immense value of good garden design.

The 4*-awarded trade stand for the Society of Garden and Landscape Design has been designed by Rachael Austin, of Austin Design Works, whose entry was one of more than 30 entries to the SGLD’s competition for the Chelsea stand's design. It takes a theatrical journey through the three stages of garden design: creative process; technical craft; completed garden.

Underpinning the playful displays is our Vicenza Sand Flamed limestone and bullnose edging. The sawn limestone is given a flamed finish, which draws out the rich fossil markings, and its density means it has very clean edges which allow for minimal joint width and a crisp, luxury finish. Being so dense, it's a low-maintenance stone, although sawn stone should always be sealed to ensure it maintains its good looks. Being part of our specification-only Prestige Natural Stone range, Vicenza Sand Flamed strengthens the message that garden design is a high-end product.

Garden House Design trade stand

Garden House Design trade stand, RHS Chelsea with outdoor kitchen, Egyptian Beige porcelain paving
Egyptian Beige porcelain paving makes an elegant, low-maintenance choice for an outdoor kitchen and bar area on Garden House Design's stand

This is Garden House Design’s fifth year of exhibiting at RHS Chelsea and fittingly have been awarded 5* by the judges. Debs Winrow and her team chose Egyptian Beige porcelain paving as a natural-looking neutral backdrop to their extensive stand. Designed to give visitors oodles of inspiration on how to live life outdoors, the stand includes an outdoor kitchen and bar counter, Renson canopy-covered areas for lounging and relaxing, and plenty of architectural planting to add drama to the architecture.

Egyptian Beige porcelain is an ideal alternative to the natural limestone in these circumstances. A really lovely stone with small fossils embedded, Egyptian Beige limestone is sawn and its light colour can mean that it’s not an ideal choice for busy cooking and eating areas where spills and stains are sure to happen. Egyptian Beige porcelain gives you all the beauty of the limestone, with a very natural appearance, and the low-maintenance, easy-to-clean advantages of this very dense manufactured stone.

Charlie Charcoal Oven trade stand

Antique Egyptian Beige limestone gives a warm complement to the rich colour of the Charlie Charcoal Oven display

Newbie to Chelsea Flower Show, Charlie Charcoal Oven worked with award-winning garden designer Callum Corrie. He created a potager-themed garden for cooking and relaxing while surrounded by nature. With the boldly coloured ovens as bright focal points, the design layered up edible planting in containers and narrow beds, so leaving room for social gatherings.

The stand’s design epitomises their advice for integrating an outdoor oven into your garden. This includes planning a space for prepping and serving, making sure seating and storage are nearby, and using planting to define zones for cooking, dining and relaxing.

Antique Grey limestone pavers with Charlie Charcoal oven, RHS Chelsea trade stand
The Antique Grey limestone pavers, laid in a stack bond pattern, add texture to the path in contrast with the Antique Egyptian limestone paving.

Callum, who won Gold and People’s Choice at Tatton Park 2024, chose a combination of Antique Egyptian Beige limestone paving for Charlie Charcoal’s stand and Antique Grey limestone pavers.

Combining two limestones is a great way to create contrast while maintaining a unifying character. Antique Grey pavers are riven and tumbled, with a shape that offers plenty of scope to create texture and interest through laying patterns. Antique Egyptian Beige limestone has a modern feel with sawn edges that have been softened with tumbling, and the paving is acid-washed to bring out the precious prehistoric markings in the stone, giving it striking character. The stand was awarded 4*.

This was the third trade stand built by Garden House Design and, like Boodles, Cornilleau loved the cool, grey tones of DesignBoard Luna. This composite decking is an ideal footing for energetic activities. Unlike wood decking, it won’t attract algae, become slippery or require staining, so leaving you more time to enjoy your time outdoors.

Laying advice

Please note that it's often policy at shows to lay paving slabs close together, without joints. This aids the break-down of the stand at the end of the show. For everyday purposes, slabs should never be laid without joints.
