Jo Thompson Wins Gold At Chelsea

With the Chelsea Flower Show in full swing and the medals awarded, we were thrilled that Jo Thompson's London Square garden won gold in the Fresh Gardens category. We were approached to supply the cream coloured porcelain tiles which make up the paved areas and steps in this modern representation of the traditional city communal garden.

Jo took her inspiration from several famous central London Squares: Ecclestone Square where the planting is so eloquently described in Roger Phillips' book; Wellington Square with its architectural triglyth details on the frontages and the simple elegance of Bonnington Square. Brought up in Pimlico, Jo knows from experience the importance of these urban breathing spaces.

The restrained palette of white flowers against pale green foliage was selected as a contrast to the larger show gardens which can take a wider spectrum. At just 3m by 12m with the further challenge of a 360 degree view, the choice of silver birches provides height, together with the much admired Cornus kousa, white irises and roses. The metal bench is a strong, sinuous statement which fits in perfectly within the space and is complemented by the bespoke stone sculpture by Frederic Chevarin. The garden was built by landscape contractors, The Outdoor Room, who had a great Chelsea landscaping three gardens which one two gold medals and one silver-gilt medal. We would like to congratulate Jo on a well-conceived design and a deserved gold medal and are proud to have been able to provide one of the many elements which make up the London Garden.
