This lovely Indian stone patio idea, built by Aye Gardening, mixes brick edging with Autumn Brown riven sandstone.

Riven Indian sandstone fits well with properties of all ages, which is one reason it's so popular. When Tom and Susan had their garden completely renovated by Aye Gardening this spring, their neighbours were so Impressed, they chose the same materials for a completely different design.

A second small patio can be a good idea when you want to enjoy sunshine at different times of day.

Two patios to enjoy at different times of day

For their garden in Ashtead, Surrey, owners Tom and Susan wanted two seating areas, one for morning and one for evening. Included in the design were also a small water feature and a small lawn—all embraced with the warm, rustic colouring of Autumn Brown sandstone. The paving is edged with a soldier course of brick, which melds with the tones in the paving and also suits neat curves. One of the enjoyable design elements of the garden is the combination of straight and sinuous lines. It was quite tricky at times as access was down a narrow drive and parking was extremely limited, so deliveries had to be made further down the road and ferried in. Aye also made a return visit. The couple had chosen black stone for the steps down to the evening patio but decided that a mellow brick, to go with the Autumn Brown sandstone, would look much better.

Aye Gardening cut the sandstone slabs to fit the curves of the sunken seating area.

Aye’s efforts were rewarded, though, as the next-door neighbours saw the lovely autumnal hues and asked Aye and his team to renovate their garden too.

The old patio needed extending and the garden levelling.

One large patio for entertaining

Harry and Lillian, a retired couple, needed their 250m2 garden made more manageable, with a better layout for visiting family. This required a totally different Indian stone patio idea. A much larger paved area with a welcoming curved outline made an ideal space for barbecues. Autumn Brown Indian sandstone is an excellent choice for this situation. A riven stone, its density and colouring makes it stain-resistant and lower maintenance than light-coloured and sawn paving choices. Its multiplicity of toning browns and buffs creates a relaxed feel that adds a warmth to a garden design.

The wider patio makes the most of the sunny aspect of the garden.

Both patios use Autumn Brown sandstone patio packs. These provide a mix of paving sizes which fit together in a relaxed pattern that gives a traditional look. Both were mortared with GftK sweep-in pointing. This is great for people who want to jet wash their patios as it stands up well to the power.

Almost finished, just awaiting pier caps. Artificial grass was chosen to augment the low-maintenance element.
