Sandstone Setts

Sandstone Setts Information

The wide choice available within sandstone setts makes them a very versatile paving option. They come in a range of colours, finishes and sizes to suit contemporary and traditional settings and can even be cut to bespoke sizes to extend your design options. Square or rectangular, our off-the-shelf sandstone setts have a riven surface with hand-cut edges, or are riven and tumbled or sawn and tumbled for a softer profile. Choose the tumbled sawn profile in Mint for a smoother, more contemporary feel. Either finish can be combined with our range of riven Indian sandstone paving to introduce pattern and texture.

What is the difference between cobbles and setts?

Traditionally cobbles are rounded stones that have reached their shape through natural weathering. They are ranked in size between pebbles and boulders. Cobbles are frequently used now as a decorative garden feature, especially in fountains and rills. Setts are square or rectangular, and have been made into that shape either by hand or machine. Both have been used to pave roads, though cobblestone paving is generally now only retained in heritage areas. As far as paving is concerned, the terms are now often used interchangeably, which is why we refer to both cobbles and setts.

Designing with sandstone setts

The warm colours of these cobble setts feel very at home in traditional settings. Sandstone setts are ideal for smaller areas, where their scale adds a sense of intimacy. Cobble setts are also ideal edging for curved paths and borders and for adding bespoke pattern to paving designs. Hard-wearing and low-maintenance, the darker colours in particular are a good choice for driveways and other high-traffic areas. Be inspired by paving designs with setts.
