Granite Setts

Granite Setts Information

Granite setts, both beautiful and highly durable, offer a range of colour and finish that makes them versatile enough for a place in both contemporary and traditional designs. Sawn and flamed, they suit the crisper lines of modern and urban spaces; riven with hand-cut edges, they add a rustic cobble quality to more traditional settings. As they are very stain-resistant and need almost no maintenance, they are ideal for driveways, damper and tree-shaded spaces, and high-traffic areas.

Designing with granite setts

Granite setts offer an easier and economical way to incorporate curves. A curved path of cobbles requires no stone cutting, which is often not the case when using paving slabs. A sinuous border receives an elegant edge with cobbles. It's difficult to overstate the versatility of granite setts. Different colours may be combined to create bespoke patterns. Alternatively, mix cobbles with larger paving slabs to add texture to more extensive designs. Granite cobbles can be used to define spaces, delineate the edges of larger areas, or create transitional paving at junctions and gateways. Their smaller scale allows them to increase the sense of space in a small area while retaining a feeling of intimacy, while the riven, hand-cut square Granite Setts create a cobbled effect that looks immediately settled in traditional courtyard designs.

How to stop weeds growing between cobble setts

Where weeds occur in paving, they root themselves into the joints between the cobbles or paving slabs. Obviously, in a driveway laid with granite setts, there are far more joints than with larger slabs and more opportunity for weeds to gain a roothold. While sand and cement are still widely used to fill joints, we recommend using GftK, a brush-in resin mortar. Weeds find it hard to take root, and freeze/thaw action won’t open up the joints to allow seeds to work their way in.

A robust driveway option that's also ideal for edging and adding interest to paving designs
